One of the initiative strategies we are using is education. Through education we are making changes in knowledge in the community members. We intent to introduce to our community the concept of composting, show them, teach them and encourage them to practice it.

By increasing their knowledge about how the different composting methods work and their many benefits, community members will put together their efforts in order to make the composting project happen.

The assumptions that underline this initiative are that: once families and community members learn and understand the composting processes, they’ll be able to alleviate their garden’s soil problems by themselves. The community Jardines de la Nueva will have a different and better environment; it will grow vegetation which is important for animals and creeks, families will be able to harvest so economy will increase while problems with clay soils like puddles, muddy sidewalks and others will decrease.

We are practicing three important processes:

  • Compost piles

  • Compost teas

  • Organic mulches

Through education as first step I’ll be enhancing awareness and making changes in attitudes among families in the community. Sharing with them that like all aspects of green living, the smallest contribution in our homes can make have a beneficial environmental impact in our community. Educate them and let them experience that organic materials should be recycled into the soil instead of being put in a garbage can. By recycling the organic materials, valuable nutrients and organic matter are recycled. We would have besides enriching our garden soils, helped alleviate the solid waste problem.

Composting Procceses

Our practices are going to be beyond home, gardens and landscaping benefits because we are going to be contributing to the environment health as well. Our composting practices will reduce pollution because it keeps organic matter out of landfills; it prevents erosion around the roads and creeks and of course It will promote a healthy growth to trees and plants.

How does this project address the problem?
